The Leviathan boss fights are infinitely more fun now Dead Space 2 and 3's free floating zero-G has been added.īrutalising Necromorphs is an iconic part of Dead Space's cycle of catharsis: you jump scare me, I reverse-engineer you from existence, and this is how we cope with fear. My favourite thing has been blasting them point blank with the Force Gun and watching as an all-but-fleshless skeleton stands up like a chicken carcass put through one of those industrial blow dryers. There was a lot of talk about the new horrendous-sounding "Necromorph peeling" system in advance of the remake, but besides being a strong visual indicator of weakened limbs and what to chop, blowing more bits off Necromorphs is definitely a good time. There are only so many limbs you can slice off, after all, even if the remake's weaponry does feel very good.

Weller has few moments if any where he isn't a stoic, battle-hardened champion, and players never really get much of a chance to connect with him on a deeper level outside of "Man, this guy is a goddamn soldier." It's a shame, too, because I think Extraction showed him to be a pretty nuanced character. Granted, it's only two chapters, and yes, Weller isn't an Engineer, but when I think of Dead Space I think about all the awesome elements it blends together, not just the fighting. Nor does Severed break up the pacing with any sort of puzzles. The occasional moment of com chatter with Lexine or a friend comes into play, but, with the exception of a couple of intense moments towards the end, Severed just doesn't do a great job with narrative - something that's crucial to the Dead Space franchise. And this is where Severed departs from the normal Dead Space pacing moment to moment, Weller's tale is a constant battle. Of course, he has to reach her first, and to do so he has to blast every baddie he sees and traipse through a bunch of environments that players will recognize from Isaac's journey. In Severed, Weller's married Lexine Murdoch, the female heroine from Extraction (who is now pregnant), and is trying to get her to safety amidst the Necromorph outbreak that kicks off Dead Space 2.

Severed tells the story of Gabe Weller, a security officer on the Sprawl and one of the main characters from Dead Space: Extraction.
